Proper control of heating appliances is becoming more important to minimise cost and climate change. But it’s not easy being green when you have to fiddle with devices like these – the top one has nine buttons & three sliders and needs 28 steps to set up a programme that is the same for each day of the week. Don’t ask about what it takes to set up a programme that matches your real life routine!
So we’re designing a control unit that needs no input at all to come up with a programme that is efficient and comfortable, because it learns your lifestyle from your use of electricity and hot water. It also recognises when you have installed local sources of energy such as solar hot water heating, photovoltaic panels, or a micro CHP unit, and ensures these are used to maximum efficiency alongside mains gas and/or electricity.
To do this our control unit learns about:
- Your lifestyle
- The thermal properties of your home
- The type and efficiency of your appliances
- The cost of your fuel inputs
- The weather outside your home.
With all this information it computes the most efficient possible schedule and temperature for your appliances to operate. This involves a basic thermodynamic parameter called exergy.
